Luiz Eduardo S. Oliveira received his MSc degree in electrical engineering and industrial informatics from Federal University of Technology - Parana, (UTFPR), Curitiba, Brazil,  in 1998 and PhD degree in computer science from the Universit du Quebec  (Montreal, Canada) in 2003. From 2004 to 2009 he was professor of computer science at the Pontifical Catholic University of Parana (PUC-PR). Currently he is with the Department of Informatics of Federal University of Parana (UFPR) where he is head of the Graduate Program in Computer Science. His research interests include pattern recognition, machine learning, and image processing.

In this talk I'll review some main topics of my research in pattern recognition by presenting some problems, solutions we have proposed, and some open challenges. It includes applications on handwriting recognition such as digit recognition, signature verification, writer identification and also problems involving texture, such as classification of forest species and music genre recognition.
